Essex on Coney

Coney Island Avenue extends from Prospect Park to the ocean at Brighton Beach. Many people along its path have fond memories of the Lower East Side — especially its food.

Harry Rasp envisioned bringing back the old flavor of Essex Street to Coney Island, and so in 1992 the old fashioned deli Essex on Coney was born. To enhance the old time flavor, a huge picture of Lady Liberty greets you as you enter, aged meats hang from the ceiling, pickles and coleslaw are on every table, and of course the aroma of corned beef permeates throughout the store.

"Essex," as the locals call it, pickles their own meat and offer a menu that follows the theme of the great rides at Coney Island, such as the "Cyclone"( turkey, corned beef & tongue) and the "Luna Park" (smoked turkey & beef fry). Metromix New York (www.newyork.metromix.com) gives their sandwiches a five-star rating.
